Well I am going to be controversial here and say how disappointed I was with Sissinghurst, it just didn't have the wow factor for me. In fact my husband commented on how my garden was much better, albeit ours being on a much smaller scale. Perhaps I fell for the hype and I was expecting much more as I had been waiting a long time to finally make a visit. The planting was looking pretty negleted, perhaps the hot summer had taken its toll, but I won't be visiting again!
In contrast, on the same day we visited Chartwell, now that is a garden with a huge wow factor for me, well cared for gardens, planting kept in tip top condition and one of the gardener's has been having great success in breeding butterflies. I visit as often as I can every Summer and the place never lets me down!

What a shame, Cicely. Even with hot weather, the gardeners should be able to look after the garden. I am sorry you were disappointed as I loved it.

We visited Hughenden Manor yesterday and thought the Walled Garden was pretty shabby, and the formal Italianate gardens ghastly with their uniform orange, red and purple flowers.
