Big Butterfly Count

Details here!

From 24th July - 1st August find a place where you might see butterflies, such as a garden or park, and count the different butterflies you see in just 15 minutes. You can make counts in several places during the week.

I did this on Saturday afternoon when the garden was alive with butterflies. My sightings were:

3 Large White
2 Small White
1 Brimstone
1 Gatekeeper
1 Marbled White
1 Peacock
1 Red Admiral
1 Small Skipper
1 Silver Washed Fritillary

Anyone else going to have a go?

my count was:
1 Red Admiral
2 Gatekeeper
1 Large White
1 Comma
2 Holly Blue
1 Silver Y moth
I'm looking forward to reading the results of the count, should be interesting!

I was at Chartwell recently and one of the gardeners, who confessed to knowing little about butterflies, was breeding butterflies and had counted up to ten Peacocks he had released in one week. He got interested in breeding them as Winston Churchill did in his day at Chartwell, he is having great success, including the release of Painted Ladies and Orange Tips.

Our Buddleia has only just started to flower & the butterflies haven't found it yet, when they do I'll take part in the count. None stay at present, they flit through.

That is brilliant that they are breeding native British butterflies at Chartwell, SweetCicely.

That is interesting, Cicely. Someone I know from Facebook has started breeding them too. She did it initially because her young son had shown an interest, and now they are into it in a big way.

Someone’s doing well.

I have a good show of bees now but I’m doing very well for Silver Y moths.

The Lavender seems to be the big attraction.

I haven’t seen many varieties of butterfly so far on my Buddleia yet!
