Question Marrow flowers dropping from plant

I have never grown marrow before and was really pleased to see flowers forming and opening on one of the plants a week or so ago. Went to the allotment today to find the flowers had all dropped off and just a clean stem (as if they were cut off) left behind . having no experience whatsoever with these plants I wondered if there was any advice from the forum on what this might be and what I need to do to stop this happening? I really want these plants to do well more than any of the others on the allotment.

Looking forward to some sound advice

Hi Martin, my first thoughts would be either birds or slugs & snails, unless of course you have a rabbit colony nearby. There is always a chance it could be mice. Is there any way you can cover the plants with wire mesh to rule out some of the possibilities. You could try leaving a humane mouse trap by the plants. To check if slugs & snails could be a problem, go out after dark and shine a torch around to see if any are present.

Do deer visit the allotments?

Where flowers bloom so does hope.
