Failed garlic?

Last year I planted some garlic in my veg patch. The garlic came as bulbs and, as I believed it to be correct, I broke the bulbs into individual cloves and planted those.

Over the last few months the plants have grown and I went to harvest them on Saturday. However, on digging two of the plants up, instead of getting new garlic bulbs I got very little garlic - looked almost like baby onions.

Have I done something wrong or is it just far too early to harvest them?

I think it might be a bit early to harvest them. I seem to remember harvesting mine at the end of August/beginning of September.

I planted my garlic last October and harvested it last week. Not the best crop ever but I put that down to the very cold weather we had in Jan/Feb this year. You will know when it is time to harvest - the tops go from green to light brown and keel over.
They do need well prepared ground with a scattering of fertilizer.
Better luck this/next year!
